Film review- "Shutter Island" (6)Paula Ligere (Latvia) 09.03.2010 02:05 Martin Scorsese – yet another miracle created by the combination of art and nature. I have to admit that I have to prepare myself for these kind of films (nerves tickling and thrilling), to inspire myself emotionally so I can look at it purely analytical and purely neutral. It is not just a cinema, oh, contrary! It is not one of those kind of films that make your evening light and uplifting, it is more like millions of electrical impulses are sent to your brains that are tightened up to the maximum. But don’t you think that I don’t like these kinds of films, quite the reverse, often the genius solutions and unexpected turns make you scream quietly to yourself and make your legs twitch in excitement under your cinema seat. „Shutter Island” was like a gulp of fresh air to me in the world of the cinema. Leonardo DiCaprio has grown from the talented and romantic Titanic boy to even more talented actor and a mature man who plays incredibly fantastic every moment of his character in this film. It really felt that he actually believes in every word spoken by himself and the trust and understanding of the director’s vision is obvious. The supporting actors: Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley excellently maintained and supported the stress required by the scenario. The entire time viewer tries to analyze who is right and who is wrong in this intense mind game. As far as I can remember, Scorsese always exaggerates a little bit with music and unique, peculiar – intermittent editing technique (it is quite visible to the naked eye). This film is no exception and the incorrect, yet so belonging and correct details greatly fit into the schizophrenia theme, mood and nature of the film. Cinematography is literally welded together with the editing and at times you cannot understand what is stronger – the technical effects photographically, or the particularity of the editing. In any case – the so called logical part of your mind will be totally mixed up so the human analytical systems unlock any logic features and you are exposed to the film entirely. I am not a doctor, so I do not know if this movie is medically accurate, but I was absolutely convinced by the psychotherapy terms and explanations, which placed the main idea of the protagonist’s fictional world and the doctor’s reality in the right spots. Until the last moment it stays unclear what is reality and what is the imagination, it is not clear whether you believe in what is real and sincere, or you blindly trust delusions and illusions. I definitely recommend to see this film! I recommend also to leave your weak nerve cells at home, because on Shutter Island you will need only the strongest ones. Excellent work and Scorsese does not disappoint at all! Pure master!
